Many will read this parable and remark about how unfair it was for the last group of workers, those who only worked for about an hour, to receive the same compensation as those who worked all day. However, the illustration might be applied all the more by and large to show us that God is not in debt to anyone; an extraordinary truth. We can comfort others and show them the lifestyle choice since we have been assisted with our concerns by God and his workers (2 Corinthians 1:3-7). Let me tell you why they are the way they are." Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise. You see, you can do many things without depending on Christ. The relationship is not merely to be recognized; it is to be acted upon: "Abide in me, and I in you. We pray in his name, Amen. He adds here the ingredient that when we obey his word, keep his commandments, we will abide in his love. Though it is wonderful when one has the privilege of leading many to Christ, and any of us perhaps can do this on one occasion or another, it is no indication of fruitlessness if you never have had this experience. I have been a member of the Presbyterian Church for thirty years, and have tried to be a consistent one all the time. We are to each be working to make more disciples of Jesus Christ while we have time. Would we demand fairness for the first group, for the first Christians? In the first 13 verses of chapter 20 of the Book of Matthew, Jesus is telling the parable about workers being paid equally. Needless to say, such behavior doesnt impress God at all. What a privilege and what a responsibility to be a worker! The point is that God owes us nothing. Notice that our Lord divides it into two sections. If you love somebody, and reach out toward them, you can go only so far unless they respond to that love. There is an activity which is to be done, and a passivity which is to be acknowledged -- an active voice and a passive voice. All through this account his emphasis is upon the fruit. We will see more of what that means as we go on in this account. Do you want to be recognized as one who follows Jesus? The third question is, "Do you love Jesus?". God has blessed me tremendously and so thankful for His grace and the people He has put in my life and His work in and around me. Why should it matter when and where God hires these workers, or how much they receive, as long as we are united in Christ and focused on the mission of making disciples? The fruit, in other words, is Christ-likeness. We expect that those who work harder and longer will receive a greater reward than those who do not. In the parable that Jesus tells, the master of the vineyard called many, You too go and work in my vineyard!. But many are troubled by those who claim that, unless a Christian is constantly winning others to Christ, he is a fruitless Christian. Eventually these branches are to be gathered and burned. You can be flat on your back in bed, sick, but manifesting a Christ-like spirit, and you are glorifying God by that experience. All of us have learned, one way or another, that love demands a response if it is to grow. Also, there is much work to be done. Surely, He decides who does what and who receives what from working in his vineyard. Thankfully, there are prophets in our midst who cry out in defense of and solidarity with workers. When we do, we are abiding in him and letting him abide in us. It might be something seemingly insignificant that may be behind the scenes or a small task or it might Pride got in their way.
